“Brother!” I spin around to find my younger brother, Kane, jumping off the back of the truck at the fire department where my rescue team is stationed. I haven’t seen him since Christmas two years ago, so it’s a surprise to find him here now. I finish tucking my gear away in my locker and turn to greet him with a hug and a smile.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I ask, clapping him on the back.

“I got the call,” he says, nudging me in the ribs as he grins and takes on a boxing stance. I play fight with him a little as we talk. While our large family doesn’t get the chance to see each other a lot because of the travel involved with work, it doesn’t affect our relationship any. The moment we’re in the same room, we’re right back where we always were.

“The mountain’s call? Or a call from the fire chief offering you a job?”

“Bit of both,” he says, laughing when he deflects one of my punches. “Missed me, huh?”

“Maybe.” I shrug and lower my guard, scrubbing my fingers down my beard as I get a good look at him. He’s a tiny bit shorter than me, clean-shaven with dark hair and a strong but lean build. The Cooper men on our side of the family seem to be divided in our genes. Me and our youngest brother, Trace, are built strong and stocky like our mountain cousins, while Judd, Rhys, and Kane are strong but lean, borrowing their genes from our mother’s side of the family. “The captain mentioned there was a job opening, and I might have hinted we have our own firefighter in the Cooper clan. You should have told us you were coming. Could have gotten the whole family together.”

He scrunches his face up. “Surprising you all is more fun. I wanted to come out here for a few days, get a feel for the place before I decide to move out here.”

“That’s what I said. And now I own a cabin, and I can’t see myself living anywhere but here. This place is part of us, brother.”

“Yeah,” he says, nodding. “I get a sense of that. Something in the air.”

“You know the legends as well as I do.”

He meets my eyes, his are the same hazel as mine. It’s a consistent Cooper family trait. “Didn’t expect them to be real though. But here you all are, finding your mates and settling down. Has the mountain sent you a woman yet?”

I rake my teeth over my bottom lip. “Yeah,” I say, nodding slowly. “It feels insane, but brother, I promise you, this place is magic.”

He smiles. “Well, I can’t wait to meet her. I’m going to Rhys’s place next to check out this eco-farm he’s got going on with his Mrs. and to just make a general nuisance of myself. Wanna come?”

Just as he asks, the little hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention and I lift
